May 20, 2011 at 5 am is when I found out I was pregnant. Determined to come up with a fun way to tell Ed, I kept the news all to myself for several hours. I can't even describe what it feels like to walk around and live your normal life with a brand-new secret like that taking over your brain. By the time I told Ed, I was near ready to explode...
Lucky for me, Father's Day cards were available all over. I grabbed one from Walgreens, signed it and wrote the estimated due date on the envelope.
We were both working from home that day, so my plan was to leave it on his desk when he stepped out of the office. Unfortunately, the opportunity never arose and I was left sitting around trying to contain my nervous excitement.
I thought I had my chance midday when Ed left for the gym. I ran out to grab lunch for both of us and hurried home to sneak in the card. But he beat me back to our apartment and foiled my plan again.
So I changed tactics and slipped the card inside a stack of the day's mail. I watched on the edge of my seat as he quickly flipped through the envelopes and managed to completely overlook the card. Seriously?!
Realizing direct action was now required, I set the card right in the middle of couch where it couldn't be missed. Immediately upon walking into the living room, he saw it and said, "What's this?"
"It's for you - open it."
7 1/2 hours after my positive pregnancy test, he looked at the date, looked at me and said, "You're pregnant?"
It was worth the wait.
