Previously...
Our last 3 days in Argentina were spent about 120 km outside the city. We wanted to finish off the trip with rest and relaxation. We found exactly that in the town of San Antonio de Areco and in particular at the La Bamba de Areco.
The drive from the city out to the countryside took us across the legendary pampas - grassy plains dotted with cows, horses and gauchos.
Every so often the wide open land was broken up by a farm or estancia, usually only detectable by a roadside gate and a seemingly endless eucalyptus tree-lined lane that led to its front door.
It was at one of these estancias, La Bamba de Areco - a working polo horse farm/bed and breakfast, that we stayed. To say we were transported away from real life is an understatement.
While there, we did a lot of nothing - reading and napping in Adirondack chairs on the expansive grounds...
...sharing our first mate...
...and eating. From dulce de leche at breakfast and lunchtime asados to meat and cheese plates and empanadas in the afternoon and intimate dinners shared with the owners, staff and other guests, we ate shamelessly well.
We also did a little bit of something - took long walks around the expansive polo fields...
...and toured the town of San Antonio de Areco, including visits to leather and silver shops, the church of San Antonio de Padua and the lauded chocolate shop La Olla de Cobre for a taste of alfajores.
Oh, and how could I forget. Ed went horseback riding. Yes, that's right, Ed rode a horse. Sadly, my pregnant belly kept me grounded for this activity. But lucky for Ed, it gave me ample time to document his experience.
And that, friends, is how we babymooned.
